Abstract:

This is the story of the French and American scientists who have helped shape the revolution in space oceanography and hydrology, from 1992 to the present day. It is arguably one of the greatest successes in the history of space science and engineering. We embark with SWOT, a revolutionary satellite launched in December 2022, on a journey spanning the world’s rivers, lakes and oceans. The journey begins in the Arizona desert as we contemplate the fate of the San Pedro River. Along the way, the satellite suggests a possible new narrative: how we can better protect our blue planet and remind ourselves that solutions exist to tackle the ecological crisis and manage water resources.
This film today carries a special resonance, with the transition to a climate-denying administration in the United States. The film shows, on the contrary, how essential the French-U.S. partnership on the SWOT programme is to preserve our planet, manage water resources more efficiently and gain new insights into Earth’s main climate and ocean mechanisms. In this regard, international cooperation is vital!
